Waiting for test results is never fun, especially when your pet is poorly. That's why we've brought IDEXX laboratory equipment in-house, one of the world's leading names in veterinary diagnostics. It means many tests can be run right here at the practice, often while you wait.

The 30-second version

  1. Many blood and urine tests can be run at the practice.
  2. Results are often ready within the same visit.
  3. Faster answers mean faster treatment, day or night.
  4. It's ideal for emergencies, pre-anaesthetic checks and monitoring.
  5. Some specialist tests still go to an external lab, and we'll always tell you.

What can we test in-house?

Depending on what your pet needs, our in-house lab can help with tests such as:

  • Blood counts, to check for infection, inflammation and anaemia
  • Blood chemistry, to check organs like the kidneys and liver, plus blood sugar and more
  • Urine tests, helpful for kidney problems, urinary infections and diabetes
  • Rapid 'SNAP' tests for some common conditions
  • Pre-anaesthetic screening, so we can tailor the anaesthetic to your pet

Why it matters for your pet

Faster answers. Instead of waiting a day or more for an external lab, we can often have results within the same appointment. That means a diagnosis, and a treatment plan, sooner.

Day or night. Because we're open 24 hours a day, every day, having a lab on site means we can test and act at 3am just as quickly as at 3pm. In an emergency, that can make a real difference.

Safer anaesthetics. Pre-anaesthetic blood tests can be run on the morning of surgery, helping us spot hidden problems and plan the safest approach.

Fewer trips, less stress. Fewer return visits and less time waiting by the phone, for you and your pet.

Better monitoring. For pets with long-term conditions, like kidney disease, diabetes or thyroid problems, quick and consistent results help us fine-tune their treatment.

Did you know? Routine blood tests can pick up early changes, like early kidney changes in older cats, before any symptoms appear. Catching things early often means more treatment options.

Senior health screening

As pets get older, regular blood and urine tests help us keep an eye on how their organs are working. We recommend senior screening as part of their health checks, and our in-house lab makes it quick and easy.

When we use an external lab

Some tests, like biopsies, certain hormone tests and specialist screening, need a specialist laboratory. In those cases, we'll send samples away and explain how long results usually take. We'll always keep you in the loop.

Your questions answered

Do I need to bring my pet in hungry for a blood test?

Sometimes. Some tests are more accurate if your pet hasn't eaten. We'll let you know when you book.

How soon will I get results?

Many in-house results are ready within the same appointment. Your vet will explain the timings for your pet's tests.

Do blood tests hurt?

We take a small sample from a vein, usually in the leg or neck. Most pets barely notice, especially with a treat or two!
